Kids Can Build a Truss Bridge at the Lancaster Science Factory![]() November 23rd 2010 (Lancaster, PA) - Today the Lancaster Science Factory debuted its newest exhibit: the Truss Bridge, made possible by a donation from High Steel Structures Inc. A truss bridge is composed of vertical, horizontal and diagonal elements arranged in a triangular pattern for strength and stability. They are the oldest of the modern bridges and are very efficient at carrying heavy loads. Kids building their own truss bridge at the Lancaster Science Factory will learn engineering and physics challenges as they construct the bridge using large magnetic pieces. The end result is a complete bridge that spans across a 7 foot table stylized with a "river" running underneath. The directions also encourage guests to try a variety of styles to create different types of truss bridges, such as the Warren Truss and the Pratt Truss. Planning for this exhibit began in February of 2009. Jeffrey Sterner, President of High Steel Structures, said, "High Steel Structures is one of the nation's largest fabricators of steel bridges, providing a great link between the Lancaster community and this important industry. We are pleased to be able to help the Lancaster Science Factory promote this part of our heritage, and make it fun and interactive for young people." High Steel Structure also has an "I" Beam exhibit at the Science Factory. The Truss Bridge is an addition to the Science Factory's engineering exhibits, which also include the Catenary Arch and Earthquake Machine. The Lancaster Science Factory is a non-profit science and technology center located at 454 New Holland Avenue, Lancaster, PA. The mission of the Lancaster Science Factory is to create an environment of learning which helps children develop curiosity, think creatively and build self-confidence as they learn the principles of science and the application of science in engineering and technology.
