2010 Summer CampsThank you for the support of our 2010 Summer Camps. Look for our 2011 Summer Camp Schedule first quarter of next year! See below chart for descriptions of each camp.
2010 Summer Camps PhotosEach camp runs Monday through Friday as either five half-day morning sessions (8:45 - 12:00) or five half-day afternoon sessions (1:00 - 4:15). The cost is $125 per child per camp. Members receive 10% off. Campers staying for both morning and afternoon session during the same week are welcome to bring a pack lunch. They will be supervised during lunch, and then have some time to enjoy the exhibit floors before the afternoon session begins. Questions? Campers will have the opportunity to explore motion in many different and wonderful ways. The campers will create a working hot air balloon from the most unexpected of materials, race rocket racers, design and build a marble roller coaster, and many other wonderful activities. Campers will learn about science fundamentals how different types of energy and forces affect the motion of an object through a series of exciting, hands on experiments. Crazy World of ScienceJune 21 - 25 from 1:00 - 4:15 or July 5 - July 9 from 8:45 - 12:00 Campers will enjoy conducting fun and wacky science experiments. From the science of candy to launching rockets, children will enjoy a variety of entertaining, hands-on activities: Candy Concoctions: Learning about and creating candy. Fizzing and Foaming: The classic Mentos/Diet Soda experiment. Launching rockets with film canisters and Alka-seltzer--see who can get their rocket the highest. Lumpy Liquids and Squishy Solids: Learning about the states of matter and creating a substance that may be a liquid or a solid. Also creating a Rainbow in a Bottle with different liquids. Welcome to the crazy world of Science! Urban Arts in ActionJuly 12 - 16 from 1:00 - 4:15 Discover the science behind drumming, break dance, painting, Djing and more! Best of all, learn how to do it yourself! Some days you will be putting your skills in action painting a mural, other days you will be spinning around learning Capoeira or learning how to make your own junkyard drum set! Whether it is mixing colors or learning how to mix music on a DJ Turn Table, you are going to enjoy the science at work next time you stop, look and listen to the world around you! Explore the physics of sound, light, friction, electronics and master the urban arts! Electronics and MagnetismAugust 2 - 6 from 8:45 - 12:00 Magnets are everywhere, not just on the refrigerator. So what can you do with a magnet? Can you make a speaker using one? Can you protect your bedroom? How about finding your way home? Explore all these possibilities and more. Rockets: Project X-35July 5 - July 9 from 1:00 - 4:15 The Lancaster Space Authority (LSA) is seeking competitive bids for a new advanced rocket launch vehicle that will reduce the costs of launching payloads into Earth orbit. Interested companies are invited to submit proposals to LSA for designing and building a rocket." As part of Project X-35, campers will be part of a team that will experiment with various types of rockets, create a budget, design and construct a test rocket, and successfully launch their test rocket at the end of the week. Campers will also be learning about the history of rockets, rocket principles, practical rocketry, and the history of launch vehicles. (Note: All rockets will utilize air and water pressure for propulsion, model rocket engines will not be used.) EcosystemsJuly 12 - 16 from 8:45 - 12:00 Campers will explore different ecosystems in our world. They will create and bring home their own "Rainforest in a Bottle" which will change over time. They will learn about deserts, savannah and oceans. And they will have a chance to play Ecosystem Jeopardy for prizes, as they learn how these ecosystems work together as a whole to make our Earth. Ecosystems Camp will involve outdoor activities. Please apply sunscreen to your campers before they arrive. Busting Myths with ScienceJuly 19 - 23 from 8:45 - 12:00 or August 2 - 6 from 1:00 - 4:15 Move over Jamie and Adam, LSF Summer camps is bringing their own team of investigators to confirm or bust the mysteries behind many myths using cool science! Some cool experiment topics include: Baghdad Battery, Killer Quicksand, Toothbrush Surprise, Balloon Lift, and Sinking Ship. Come join our team and let's investigate the truth behind these and many other great myths this summer in this highly interactive, hands on, summer camp! Visual Art and ScienceJuly 26 - 30 from 8:45 - 12:00 Art and Science may seem like two subjects that are very far away from each other in school-how could they possibly be connected? The truth is that without science, art would be very difficult or impossible! How does paint stick to a page? How do colors mix to create new colors? How do different chemicals and pigments mix together to create paints, invisible images, and even moving paintings? The paper that we use everyday- how is it held together? How is paper made? Visual Art and Science will answer these questions and many more! Science in SculptureJuly 26 - 30 from 1:00 - 4:15 Kites, wind chimes, and even candy-there's a science, and an art, behind that! Sculptures aren't just for museums-we are surrounded by little three dimensional artworks every day. Sculptures can be made of many different things-from paper to glue and clay to bubbles. To make sculptures, artists use physics and chemistry to create sculptures that include chemical reactions, are very strong, very noisy, and even very delicious! In Science in Sculpture, we will create many three-dimensional artworks and discover the science behind sculptures! Physics FunAugust 9 - 13 from 8:45 - 12:00 Explore topics such as light, sound, electricity and force and motion. Play with the physics of toys. Learn magic tricks that rely on physics and amaze your friends. Even make, and eat, ice cream using liquid nitrogen. You'll be amazed and amused with all this Physics Fun! Solar Powered KidsAugust 9 - 13 from 1:00 - 4:15 Explore the Earth's ultimate energy source: the Sun! Launch a solar air bag and cook a solar snack. Learn how the sun's power has been harnessed through the ages and how it will be used in the future. Each camper will design and build and race a solar powered toy car. We will examine passive solar power, active solar power and photovoltaic cells as we become Solar Powered Kids. |
